Als künstlerischer Leiter der Griechischen Nationaloper, widmet sich Giorgos Koumendakis neben seinen symphonischen und kammermusikalischen Werken der Komposition von Musik für die darstellende Kunst (Theater, Kino, Tanz, Oper, Installationen) wie z.B. die zweiteilige Oper „The Murderess“ im Auftrag der Griechischen Nationaloper. / As the artistic director of the Greek National Opera, Giorgos Koumendakis dedicates himself to the composition of music for the performing arts (theatre, cinema, dance, opera, installations) such as the two-part opera „The Murderess“ commissioned by the Greek National Opera in addition to his symphonic and chamber music works.
Er erhielt u.a. Auszeichnung von György Ligeti (Komponisten von Symmolpa V) und nahm an der 52. Biennale in Venedig teil. 1987 arbeitete er zum ersten Mal mit dem renommierten französischen Ensemble für zeitgenössische Musik „Ensemble InterContemporain“ zusammen. 1992 Prix de Rome: Ehrenstipendium mit einem einjährigen Aufenthalt an der Französischen Akademie in Rom (Villa Medici). / He received an award from György Ligeti (composer of Symmolpa V) and took part in the 52nd Venice Biennale.
